The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, has arrived on an official visit to the Maldives this morning. The Minister was received at the Velana International Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs is visiting the Maldives upon the invitation of Foreign Minister Asim, to lead the Sri Lankan Delegation at the Third Session of the Maldives – Sri Lanka Joint Commission, scheduled to be held on 09 February 2017.
During this visit, the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister will be meeting Minister Asim and also paying a courtesy call on the President of Maldives, His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The Maldives – Sri Lanka Joint Commission was established in 1984 with the primary aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of economic, social, fisheries, education and health. The First Session of the Joint Commission was held in 2006, and the Second Session was held in 2014.
