Colombo, 3 November 2016 Ambassador Her Excellency Zahiya Zareer has sent a message of condolence to Mrs. Amaradeva and family, following the demise of veteran vocalist, musician and composer, Mr. Pandith W. D. Amaradewa. Ambassador's message reads as follows: "It was with great sadness that I learnt the sad news of the passing away of Maestro Pandit WD Amaradeva. Mr. Amaradeva was a distinguished Sri Lankan maestro and a dear friend for the Maldives who also composed the new melody of the Maldives national anthem. Delegation from Dhivehi Language Academy of Maldives met with the officials of Department of Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka

A delegation led by Mr. Ashraf Ali, President of the Dhivehi Language Academy of Maldives, including renowned poets, writers and actors yesterday met with the officials of Department of Cultural Affairs, SAARC Cultural Centre, prominent scholars, poets and writers of Sri Lanka. High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer departs to Fiji to represent the Maldives at the 45th Consultative Committee meeting of the Colombo Plan

26 September 2016, Colombo High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer has departed to Fiji to represent the Maldives at the 45th Consultative Committee meeting of the Colombo Plan scheduled to be held in Suva from 28-30 September 2016. The Consultative Committee is the highest review and policy making body of the Colombo Plan. It provides a forum for member states of the Colombo Plan for the exchange of views on current development problems facing member countries and review the work of the Colombo in economic and social development within the region. High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer meets with the CEO of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce

High Commissioner Zahiya Zareer met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Ms. Dhara Wijayatilake yesterday. President Yameen Ratifies Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression Bill

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today ratified the ‘Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression’ bill, which was passed by the Parliament on 9th August 2016.
Protection of Reputation and Freedom of Expression Act aims at preventing malicious defamation and protecting the reputation of individuals. The Maldives Constitution of 2008 sets out an expanded Bill of Rights, including freedom of expression (article 27) and a right to reputation and good name (article 33), and freedom of media (article 28). At the same time, the Constitution also recognises in Article 16, on the need to regulate, by a legislation of the Parliament, on how the rights can be exercised.
